WHAT To EXPECT

It can be a big decision and investment of time and money to come along to therapy. Anna provides a safe, trusting therapeutic relationship, whilst ensuring that the work together is paced according to client needs.

  • Therapy can be brief (1-6 sessions), and for some people this is a helpful start and meets their needs. Therapy is rarely a ‘quick fix’, and problems may have been in development for a long time before arriving ‘on the couch’, so people may also come for a longer course of therapy. The timeframe for this varies depending on what the problem is and the model of therapy being used. Anna does not typically work with people for more than 24 sessions.

Ideally, therapy will have a beginning, middle and an end.

Therapy begins with a 90 minute session, so that Anna can start to understand you and what you are seeking help with. This conversation will explore different areas of your and your life, such as your current context, your personal and medical history, past and current events that have shaped your life, your relationships, your coping style and strategies, as well as identifying your strengths. She will find out about your ideas and expectations for therapy, and will share some ideas and options about what the process can ‘look like’. This stage involves negotiating a few logistics such as the scheduling of appointments and number of sessions.

During the first few sessions of therapy, we will collaborate over a ‘formulation’ - or jointly making sense of what is happening for you and why that might be. This informs what will be helpful for therapy to focus on and orientates the work towards specific cognitive, behavioural, and emotional interventions to help develop or amplify tools and strategies that might be useful in response to the problem that you are facing.

All therapy is time-limited, and therefore will have an ending. In life, everyone has a history of endings, sometimes they are painful and sometimes they are welcomed and planned for. Whether the number of sessions is brief or long, it is important that therapy gives appropriate attention to finishing therapy. This can look different for different people, depending on their preferences and histories, but importantly the ending will be discussed together and will be as supportive to your needs as possible.

FAQs

How many sessions will I need?

There is variation in the number of sessions people may choose or require. This number can be affected by several factors, such the nature of the presenting problem, the model of therapy that is most appropriate to use with that problem, as well as client goals and resources. Given this, therapy is evidence-based, negotiated, and individually tailored.

Can I use my health insurance to pay for sessions?

You may be entitled to some funded sessions through your health insurance.  Check your policy or call your insurer to determine if you have this provision in your policy.  If so, usually you will need to pay for your sessions, and then make a claim submitting the receipts from payment of the sessions.

Anna works with some employers and insurance companies who fund sessions, these companies can be invoiced directly without the client having to be involved.
